Study Group Session 104: General Question and Answer
Session Notes
Resource Sharing Updates from the Discussion Forum
Diana Borges, OCLS:
Page 1+ Digitization & Copyright Meeting Recording: We held and introductory session on local digitization and copyright on April 28. Liana has posted the recording and slides from that meeting: https://clo-collaboration-spaces.atlassian.net/wiki/x/C4BChQ.
Reminder: Page 1+ Resource Sharing (Digitization) Follow-Up Session: We also held a drop-in session on May 1 to support library staff working on configuring digitization for local requests and would like to remind staff that there will be another session on Thursday, May 8th at 2pm. You can register for the session here. We will provide a demo of select sections of the configuration instructions and have time for Q&A. We also wanted to remind staff that it is important to complete these configurations if you wish to proceed with digital resource sharing between institutions in the next phase of this project. You can hide the option for your users to request digital copies with Display Logic Rules (refer to section 12 of the Configuring Digitization for Local Requests).
Potential Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) strike - Page 1+ Physical Resource Sharing: posted instructions for how to make your RS library temporarily inactive for borrowing and lending, add a note to your resource sharing form, or add a banner in Primo VE to let your patrons know that requests might be delayed or rejected due to the strike
OCLS: Update on MS Teams Issue
Diana Borges, OCLS:
We are aware that there is an issue with study group participants losing access to the group chat during meetings. We conducted extensive testing and troubleshooting with our IT provider and learned they suspect the cause was a result of a change in functionality made by Microsoft to Teams Meetings. Unfortunately, there is nothing that we can do to resolve the issue at this time. The issue seems to arise randomly and inconsistently for different participants. If you do lose access to the chat during a study group meeting, please let us know and we will read the chat messages out to keep everyone in the loop. You are also welcome to unmute or share your screen if you have a question for the group. We will share resources posted in the chat with the session notes. We can also send them directly to you if you prefer.
SSO on campus
Rebecca Pearson, Lambton College:
Has anyone noticed if they are required to go through SSO from a database link in Primo VE if they are on campus?
At Lambton, when a student opens the internet browser, it immediately signs them into mylambton, which is one of the options for SSO.
This is happening for more than one of their databases.
However, they still have OPAC computer set up that is not an account that has SSO associated with it, so patrons can’t open databases from that catalogue.
Don’t want someone’s SSO account to be used to login on that computer.
OPAC has on campus IP address. Assumed that within a certain IP range on campus, authentication won’t be required.
Aimee Jeffrey, Conestoga:
works the same at Conestoga
they were recently working with alumni trying to access some databases that they thought they would have access to and couldn’t help them
It’s how your IT has set up those OPACs for guest access and there is no workaround.
Terri Duff, Fleming:
At Fleming, students have to sign in on camps
don’t usually let anyone sign in on the OPAC
have to sign in from their A-Z list on the OPAC computer on campus too
Sarah Walker, Confederation:
patrons also have to log in on campus at Confederation
if staff are showing a patron something on the OPAC, they use the generic info desk login and then log out
Travis Winwood, Algonquin:
tried the database links and getting the login request for them as well
Rebecca:
a few colleges are noticing on campus a requirement for SSO using the Primo VE links and the A-Z links
this is how the set up works right now and there is no workaround, except using a generic login for the OPAC computer
this is not an issue for students or off campus, just with guest accounts or the OPAC computer or if you’re working on a cell phone that you’ve never logged in on
Lambton’s IT will reach out to help desk
Prediction Patterns Question from George Brown College
Diana Borges, OCLS:
Michael Reansbury has asked in any libraries have experience setting up patterns for journals to allow for claiming in Alma. I shared the session and additional information about prediction patterns but Michael would like to speak to someone who has experience setting this up for claiming in Alma.
Danielle Emon, OCLS:
CLO Cataloguing Session on serials and prediction patterns: https://clo-collaboration-spaces.atlassian.net/wiki/x/EQBxfg .
Sheridan might be a college to ask, they hosted the CLO Cataloguing Session
Newsletter to let staff know about new or important features in Alma/Primo VE
Dana O’Hagan, Niagara College
considering sending a weekly newsletter to highlight one new or important feature in Alma/Primo from the New Releases communication from OCLS and sending a new feature each week, have other colleges thought about sending an email or newsletter?
have a Libguide outlining the most common practices in Alma, but we are wondering if other colleges
have different working groups (e.g. SIS admin) but staff still prefer to email Dana when they have questions
The email from Allyson is great and very helpful. All of the documentation available is very helpful. For me, it is just a matter of having my staff read the content and have it absorbed.
Aimee:
Conestoga has a Teams channel for reminders, updates, and troubleshooting questions.
Email might be best as sometimes that folks don’t check all of their Teams channels.
Terri: Fleming has a Teams channel and a Ref Stats page, and an FAQ page with Alma/Primo info.
Liana Giovando, OCLS: The OCLS Page 1+ Alma & Primo VE Guide also has getting started information and tips for features.
Danielle: Same exists for best practices in cataloguing and acquisitions as well.
Rebecca: Lambton also has a Teams channel, but if there is something that influences circulation... I often just go around explaining it to people.
Diana: If you suggestions for improving the new releases communication, please let OCLS know.
